Welcome to National Women's.
We aim to give you our best service at all times.
The following information provides a
general outline of facilities and services at National Women's for women likely
to be admitted to the hospital. More detailed information is available for women
who attend a clinic or who are admitted to a ward or unit.
Staff are always willing to help
with any queries or requests.
Contents
What
to bring with you when you are admitted to the hospital
Bring comfortable day clothes, nightwear, footwear and toiletries. As storage
space is limited please do not bring unnecessary clothing. You may wish to bring
items such as a phone card or coins as well as your own pillow and cup. Please
make arrangements with a family member or friend to wash your personal clothes
as there are limited facilities for this in the hospital. We recommend personal
items be named.
Medication
and Drugs
Please bring with you all medications and ointments you are using, and any
private x-rays and scans.A pharmacy is
open Mon-Fri between 8.00am – 6.00pm
and 10.00am – 4.00pm Saturday & Sunday, on level 5 of the support
building (near the enquires desk). You will need to check with the doctor
before going home whether any medicines you were taking are to be continued.
Cash
and Valuables
Please do not bring valuables (including valuable items of clothing) into the
hospital with you unless absolutely necessary. The hospital does not accept
responsibility for cash, jewellery, watches or other valuables unless they are
handed over to your nurse or midwife for safe keeping and a receipt is issued
for them.
Meals
and Nutrition Services
Each day women who are inpatients will receive a menu for the following day‘s
meals. The menu forms with the selected choices are collected by Nutrition
Services Staff. Dietitians can advise on all aspects of your nutritional care.
Staff are able to help if you are on a special diet or if you want to talk to a
dietitian.
Meal Times at National Women's are:
Breakfast….7.30am - 8.30am
Lunch….....12.30pm - 1.15pm
Dinner....….5.15pm - 6.15pm
On most wards, hot drinks are available on a self
service trolley. On the gynaecology wards hot drinks are served at meal times.
Identification
All staff you meet will introduce themselves and be wearing identification
badges that states their name and role.
An ID bracelet is attached to each woman's wrist
on admission. This assists the staff to check that everyone receives the test or
treatment meant for them. In patients wear an ID bracelet at all times. Babies
are identified with two identity labels.
Visitors
Visiting hours vary for each part of the hospital.
Generally the main support person may visit
between 7am and 8.30pm. Parents and siblings of babies in the intensive or
special care baby units are welcome at all times. Visiting
hours in Ward 97-Gynecology are 11.00am - 8.00pm postnatal wards, Ward
96/98 and Tamaki visiting hours are 1pm to 8.00pm For further details
check with hospital staff. Outside specified times, visitors must take
arrangements with the nurse in charge of the ward, as refusal to admit visitors
may offend. Noise levels should be kept at a
minimum for the consideration of other patients.Videos and cameras for personal
use are welcome. All visitors are expected to respect the privacy of other
patients and staff.
Refreshments
for visitors
Some wards/units have a cafebar at which visitors can get a hot drink.There
are also snack vending machines on most levels.
There are several food outlets and a dairy on level 5 which
are open 7 days. Refreshments and light meals are available.
Play
Room
The Play room is on level 10 and is open Mon-Fri 8.30am– 12.00pm and 1.00pm–
3.30pm for children under 5 years who have a parent or caregiver as a patient on
site . The
service is free and is often used by women who want to leave a child in the
playroom whilst they attend a clinic appointment or visit a sick baby in the
Newborn Unit. Phone 307 4949 extn 25190 for more information about the
service and to book your child in.
Transport
and Parking
A bus stop is located at the main entrance to the hospital. Parking for
visitors is available in the visitors carpark. The Hospitals bus 283 stops
outside the main entrance before proceeding to greenlane clinical centre
the link bus stops directly outside the hospital
entrance.
Consent
Our staff will explain treatments, procedures and their likely effects
before any procedure is carried out. Women are encouraged to ask for additional
information or clarification if they are unclear about anything. For procedures
(e.g. operations, the administration of anaesthetics, and certain diagnostic
procedures) specific consent in writing is usually required. Information about
patient's rights is available throughout the hospital in a range of languages.
Smoking
and Alcohol
Auckland district health board buildings are smoke free. Smoking is only permitted
outside the hospital grounds. Alcoholic beverages or illegal substances must not
be brought into the hospital buildings or grounds.
Mail
and Newspapers
Mail for patients is delivered to the wards on weekdays. Stamps and
newspapers can be purchased at the postshop on level 5.
Telephones
Coin and card operated telephones are available. There are also some
free phones in family/Whanau rooms in some wards. The hospital is not able to
receive incoming calls for patients.
The use of cell phones is restricted in some
areas where they may interfere with electrical and monitoring equipment e.g.
cardiac monitors). We encourage people to check with staff that the use of a
cell phone will not be a problem.
Services
for the Deaf
There is 24 hour access to a telecommunication device, Superprint 200 in the
delivery unit for communication with women who are deaf. Telephone 631-0735
to be connected to this service.
Banking
There is an ASB cashflow machine located behind the postshop on level 5 This
machine accepts most cashflow/credit cards.
Te
Whare Awhina
Te Whare Awhina was established to assist the wellbeing of patients by
providing accommodation and support for their whanau.
Te Whare Awhina is the whanau-family
accommodation service located on the Grafton site. Preference for this
accommodation is given to whanau-family members who have travelled to Auckland
from other regions.
The accommodation charge is a set fee of $5.00
per person per night. In some instances this charge varies, just check with your
Kaiatawhai prior to them making a referral (phone 6296 or pager 934829).
Interpreters
National Women's staff are able to arrange interpreting services should this
be required for people who do not speak English as their first language.
Arrangements can be made through the nurse or midwife in charge of the
ward./unit. Alternatively, patients may choose to bring their own interpreter.
Health
and Disability Advocates
The advocacy service is run by the Health Advocates Trust. This service is
independent of the hospital and can help people ensure their rights are
respected.
This service is free. Phone 0800 555-050 –
Mon-Fri 8.30am– 5.00pm or (09) 623-5799 for the Head Office of the Trust.
Physiotherapy
Women's Health physiotherapists are available to assess and treat muscle and
joint problems related to pregnancy and advise on continence therapy as
well as on post-surgery mobilisation.
Social
Workers
Social Workers are available to assist women with family and personal
problems. They provide information and counselling services and will liaise and
advocate on your behalf.
Lactation
Consultants
Lactation consultants are available on referral to assist mothers with all
aspects of breastfeeding.
Chaplaincy
Services (pastoral care)
The chaplaincy service is available to all patients and their families.
Chaplains are able to be contacted at any time day or night. Regular services
are held in the Hospital Chapel (level 6) and the National Women's Quiet
Room (level 10 support building). The Chapel
and Quiet Room are always open for patients and family members to use.
Women's
Health Information Unit.
The Women's Health Information Unit provides a comprehensive range of free
information on health matters. The Unit is situated in the 9th floor atrium area
and is open Mon-Fri, 9am – 4pm, phone ext. 307 8978, or email

Security
National Women's has an active 24 hour security service. If you have a
concern about security issues, notify the ward staff or security officers
immediately. After hours, entry and exit to the building is by the main entrance
only.
Clinical
Records
Current and former patients are entitled to access their clinical records. A
member of the medical, nursing or midwifery staff can be organised to discuss
your records with you. You may have a copy of your clinical records or any part
of them by writing to:

People requesting their records need to provide
the following details:

Your full name and date of birth.

If
you have ever had a name change, please include all
the names you have used in the past, so we can have a better chance to
locate your old record.)

Please specify which information from the clinical records you would
like a copy of. If you are not sure what information is required you
could explain what the information will be used for, if you feel
this is appropriate and we will copy the relevant notes rather than
copy the entire record for you unnecessarily. Alternatively, you may
choose to come in person and view your record first.

Sign your request and attach a copy of any personal identification
document that has both your name and your signature, for example
your drivers licence or your passport.
. A copy of the records is usually sent within 20
working days. This service is free.
Information from clinical records may be used for
medical audit or review purposes. Information obtained for these purposes is not
used in an identifying form. Patients may at times be asked to complete a
consumer questionnaire. These are anonymous.
It is the hospital's policy to have general
information about patients available through Patient Enquiries (ph: 09 307
4949). The only information made available is the patients name, ward and
general condition. Patients are able to request that this information is not to
be released.
Hospital
Fees
People who are New Zealand citizens or who have obtained permanent residence
are entitled to free health care. Women not born in New Zealand need to present
their passport on their first visit to the hospital for verification.
Non-residents will be required to pay for their healthcare.
Teaching
and Research
Research projects are carried out at National Women's with the aim of
improving knowledge and care provided to women and babies. National Women's is
also a teaching hospital for midwifery and medical students. Women receiving
care may be asked to consider participation in a research project, and /or have
a student involved in their care.
Feedback/complaints
To help improve the service National Women's staff welcome suggestions,
comments and complaints. These can be made verbally or in writing. Letters can
be sent to the Quality Coordinator, General Manager or the Complaints
Co-ordinator, National Women's, Private Bag 92189, Auckland.
