The hospital works closely with the Auckland School of Medicine in its teaching and research roles with medical students as well as doctors undertaking postgraduate training. The hospital also liaises with institutions and tutors involved in teaching midwives, nurses and physiotherapists. Practical experience is important for students so women may be asked to allow a student to assist with their care. Consent must be obtained in advance from women (or parents of babies) before students and others can be present, or become involved in a teaching situation. In New Zealand, all patients have
the right to refuse to participate in teaching sessions. This right is outlined
in the Code of Health and Disability Consumers' Rights produced by the Health
and Disability Commissioner. |
