Maternity Care at National Women's

National Women's provides comprehensive maternity services in. Maternity services are provided by doctors, midwives and nurses and domino midwives. The hospital's facilities are also used by a number of practitioners who have access agreements, including midwives, private obstetricians and GP's

National Women's maternity services include:

  • Women's Assessment Unit (WAU) provides a 24 hour service for specialised care and monitoring for pregnant women, those having an induction and for women in premature labour.

  • One labour and birthing suite with 12 rooms and 6 spa baths.

  • caesarean section theatres

  • hospital based antenatal clinic

  • community-based antenatal and postnatal clinics in 10 different locations

  • Domino midwives who provide continuity of community midwifery care

  • 2 antenatal/postnatal wards

  • specialist lactation service

  • specialist services for women with substance abuse and psychiatric disorders

  • comprehensive ultrasound prenatal diagnostic service and fetal therapy

  • High dependency Unit for seriously ill pregnant women

  • High Risk Obstetric services

 Midwifery Services

Midwives provide care during pregnancy, labour, birth and after the baby is born. Recent changes to the maternity service have included the development of the continuity of care approach within the hospital, community, clinics and domino midwifery service. Midwives work in all areas of the maternity service but have a number of different roles at National Women's.

Team Midwives work in all areas of the hospital maternity service. These small teams provide care antenatally, during labour and birth and postnatally.

Home Care Midwives provide some maternity care as well as home-visits after mother and baby leave hospital. They are linked to hospital maternity teams and provide pregnancy care from the hospital community clinics.

Domino Midwives are hospital-based midwives who provide continuity of care both in and out of hospital. They work in small teams of midwives for backup and relief purposes.

bullet the Substance Abuse Liaison Midwife (Alcohol Drug Addiction Pregnancy Team) has particular expertise in assisting women with psychological issues and alcohol or drug dependency.
